From May 19th to May 21st, Chinese people all over the world are observing the National Mourning Days to the victims during the earthquake. Our hearts and thoughts are with our fellow Chinese people.
While we are all mourning for the tremendous loss from the disaster, we all want to do our best to help the relief effort in our motherland. On Sunday May 25th, 2008, nearly 100 Chinese community organizations and individuals in Greater Boston will join hands and hearts with the people of China to provide assistance through a benefit concert. The entire proceeds from the concert will be donated to the earthquake relief efforts.

Olympics and Tibet (talk)

US-China Relations: Olympics and Tibet?
A lecture by Professor Ling-Chi Wang, Professor Emeritus, Asian American Studies, UC Berkeley Time: 6:00pm, May 6th (Tuesday) Location: 54-100
Refreshments will be served.
With the recent protests and counter-protests en route the Olympic torch relay, there has been mounting criticism of the Chinese government from the Western public. Agendas of the criticizers range from environmentalism, press freedom, Darfur, to skyrocketing commodity prices and the global food shortage crisis. In particular, China's policy in the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) takes center stage. Might there be a disconnect between the East and the West on China's social and political development?
Come to this talk to explore the question further...
In this talk, Professor Wang will examine recent events related to the use of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the torch relay by Western countries, and specifically the U.S., to shape and engage China on a wide range of foreign and domestic issues. He will also talk on the emerging role of Chinese in the U.S. in this context.
Professor Ling-Chi Wang was born in Xiamen of Fujian Province, China in 1938, received his undergraduate education in music and philosophy at Hope College ('61), and graduate education in ancient Semitic languages and literature at Princeton Seminary, University of Chicago, and University of California, Berkeley. In 1969, instead of his original plan to teach ancient Semitic languages, he participated in the creation and development of the interdisciplinary field at Berkeley now known as "Ethnic Studies". He specialized in the history of Chinese and Asian minorities in the US and extended his research interests to Overseas Chinese studies and US-China relations.

Uproar in Lhasa -- Searching for Common Ground
Time: 6:00pm, April 23rd (Wednesday) Location: 4-270
As most people in our community, our attention was drawn to the high profile protests and counter-protests in London, Paris and San Francisco when the 2008 Olympics Game Torch Relay passed these cities. Tibet seems to be the center of debate from all the sides involved in those protests. What is really happening in Tibet? What do ordinary Tibetans regard their daily lives and their future? Everyone is curious.
To address such curiosity, we are pleased to have the president of Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund, Dr. Arthur N. Holcombe, to give a speech next Wednesday on MIT campus. The title of his speech will be 'March 2008 Riots in Lhasa: Differing Perceptions, Differing Anger and Resentment. What can be done to help address the concerns of Tibetans in Tibet?'
Dr. Holcombe served in many postings with the United Nations Development Program in different developing countries including Afgahnistan, Pakistan, Fiji, Sudan and China. In 1998 Dr. Holcombe established the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund to promote Tibetan livelihoods and well being in rural areas of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. He has lots of first-hand experience from his field trips to different parts in the region. There will be a question-and-answer session right after the talk to allow extensive exchange of information and opinions among the audience and the speaker. We hope Dr. Holcombe's talk can turn into a good starting point for all of us to learn and understand more about the history, the facts, and the future of the Tibetan people.
Thank you so much for your attention. And see you on April 23rd (Wednesday) at 6pm, Room 4-270.
Refreshment will be provided.
